Something Steep...

 Random Cactus Plant!!!!

Vall de Laguar,
Talk about one of the best weekends ever...ok, I've had a lot of those here, but this one was spectacular!  A group of 8 students and Profa Slagter took a bus on Friday afternoon up to this little pueblo called Benimaurrell.  It was about 1.5hours from Denia(using back roads).  We stayed in an albergue (hostel) that night. The first thing we did was go for a little walk, which included climbing a rather large rock that had cactus on it.  The cactus fruit is in season(apparently) and so we decided to try it.  Not knowing of course whether it was going to kill us or not.  So we all proceeded to partake in this unknown food and find out the next day that a.  it is edible, and b. there is a better way to eat it so you don't get spines in your hands, and face.   It was great to get to know professor Slagter better and spend some time studying and enjoying the company of a smaller group.  We woke up early Saturday morning for some fresh bread and olive oil...I love Spanish food!!!  Once breakfast was complete we began our journey, the reason we had come to this remote town was to walk the Vall de Laguar camino(walk).  It is a walk that normally takes about 4 hours (it ended up taking us around 5hours because our unofficial guide (who is also our bus driver Ricardo) stopped and talked to us about stuff every 10 minutes)  It goes around the valley and through the Barranco de Infierno (Hell's Ravine) and then up a very very long way!!!  It was soooo much fun, we walked and walked and talked and walked and drank from fresh water springs in the mountains and just had a wonderful time in general!!  That afternoon we came back and sat in a park for children in our t-shirts and shorts (rolled up jeans for most) and just sun-bathed.  Professor Slagter ended up leaving that night so we got to spend some time with just us...believe it or not all we did was study...and watch a movie.  We had a fire and good company with good food (tortilla espanola)!!!  yummy.  It was a fantastic night.  Sunday morning we woke up, had brunch at 10 and then set out to scale another mountain.  We ended up forging our own path to the top because we couldn't find the real path (oops).  It made it more fun though, although once we did find the path it was a little easier...a lot less scaling and lots more walking!  Then we reached the top where you could see all the way to the sea and back into the mountains.  We were so much in awe that we sat there for 1.5hours, just basking in the glory of God's creation!! (and the sun).  After we left we ended up back in the park in the sun (I know those people think we are weird) for a while before we left to clean up the albergue and head back to Denia.  I loved it...except for the legs that feel kinda like jelly right now....a painful jelly!!  That was a lot of mountain climbing in 2 days for me!  Iknow I can't describe it, but it was a very relaxing weekend and we were privileged to spend some time walking and enjoying God creativity!!

The one below is from the top of the mountain we climbed on Sunday.  The mountain you can see in the background is Montgo, I live on the other side of that...and the sea is waaaaayyy in the background.  :)
